Discovery Channel Orders Abraham Lincoln Doc From Mark Wahlberg's Production Company (Exclusive)

'The Lost Lincoln' features experts investigating whether a newly discovered, secret photograph could be the final image of our 16th president.

Does a long-lost photo of Abraham Lincoln exist?

Discovery Channel is aiming to answer that question in a new documentary that's being produced by Mark Walberg's production company Unrealistic Ideas and directed by Jason Cohen, who was nominated for the best short documentary Oscar for Facing Fear in 2014.

There are currently only 130 known images of President Lincoln on record. However, The Lost Lincoln will investigate whther there is another image of him that was taken of the president in secret after he was assassinated and thus has remained hidden for more than 150 years.

The doc centers on an investigation by professional authenticator Dr. Whitny Braun to reveal evidence uncovering whether a newly discovered, secret photograph could be the 131st and final image of Lincoln. Her journey to discover the truth takes the viewer from to halls of the National Archives to the scene of his last moments alive in Ford's Theater and the Petersen House.

The hours spent at Petersen House, where President Lincoln would ultimately succumb to his wounds, remain shrouded in mystery. After learning that an alleged photo of Lincoln, taken in those final hours, exists, Braun, a professor of bioethics at Loma Linda University who has authenticated innumerable historical items in her tenure, sets out to prove the image's authenticity using innovative forensics and facial recognition software, as well as in-sights from renowned historians and Lincoln biographers and scholars.

The special also will use to state-of-the-art technology as it pieces together a detailed timeline of events with expert insights. Other experts who present findings include Dr. Bennet Omalu, a world-renowned forensic pathologist who was played by Will Smith in Concussion; Dr. Francis Palmer III, a globally recognized expert in facial evaluation; and Dr. James Braun, a firearms historian.

The Lost Lincoln premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, Oct. 4, as part of Undiscovered, the new Discovery documentary strand that explores some of our greatest mysteries, potentially rewriting our own history.

The doc is produced for Discovery by Unrealistic Ideas, with Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Archie Gips as executive producers.
