Discovery Communications to Launch TLC in U.K., Ireland
The company says it has invested millions into the regional launch of the network, which will air U.K. original content and such U.S. hits as "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" and OWN's "Oprah’s Next Chapter."
LONDON -- Discovery Communications said Wednesday that it is launching TLC in the U.K. and Ireland at the end of April.
The flagship network, which Discovery says is already the world’s biggest female entertainment channel, will air a mix of U.K. original and U.S. hits, such as Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. It will also air Oprah’s Next Chapter, hosted by Oprah Winfrey, from Discovery's OWN channel.
"Millions have been invested in the U.K. launch of the channel," said the network's CEO David Zaslav, who didn't provide full financial details.
TLC will launch in the U.K. and Ireland on Tuesday April 30 on satellite TV giant BSkyB, in which Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. owns a 39 percent stake, cable operator Virgin Media and others.
The channel will feature U.K. and global stars, including Holly Valance in Ultimate Shopper, Dawn O’Porter in Undercover Mums, Lisa Snowdon in Your Style In His Hands and Winfrey.

TLC is in over 100 million households worldwide. The carriage deals in the U.K. will get it into 13 million more homes, with Ireland adding about 420,000.
