Discovery Launching Moonshine, Alaskan TV Series

"Moonshiners" and "Mountain Men of Alaska" will premiere this summer.

Discovery will premiere two unscripted television series this summer.

Moonshiners (working title) follows a diverse group of people living in Appalachia who carry on a 200-year-old tradition passed down from their forefathers: making moonshine.

The series, from Magilla Entertainment, will tell the story of the people who brew their moonshine — either in the woods behind their house or in their garages — and the local authorities who try to keep them honest. It will feature what life is like in the Appalachian Mountain region.

Produced by Discovery Studios, Mountain Men of Alaska (working title) centers on the Kilcher family and their community outside Homer, Alaska. Led by patriarch Atz Kilcher, singer Jewel’s father, the family have lived on their land for three generations.

The show also focuses on the homesteaders who live by the Kilchers, including “Brother Roadkill,” who eats animals lying dead on the side of the road.
