Disney misses Japan digital channel

Fox, Wowow big winners among new entrants

TOKYO -- Fox Japan landed itself a shot at one of the new 2011 digital channels, while Disney missed the cut as authorities announced the shortlist for applications on Wednesday night.

The invitation by a Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications body opened the way for 11 channels to be bid for by eight operators by July 1st – though insiders said this was effectively the final decision.

The shortlist is made up of all fee-based channels except for The Open University of Japan. Ministry officials were reported to be concerned about the viability of ad-supported offerings in the current financial climate.

Disney’s proposal was a free to air offering.

Japan’s largest satellite/cable channel Wowow, was a big winner, landing two of the new slots.
