Disney rings mobile TV 'Bell'

SINGAPORE -- The Disney Channel will launch its first original, made-for-mobile TV series, "As the Bell Rings," in Southeast Asia on March 7, the company said Thursday.

Based on Disney Channel Italy format "Quelli' dell'Intervallo," the bite-size teen sitcom will be offered as part of Disney Mobile Extra, streamed via Singapore's mobile network StarHub.

StarHub also operates the country's dominant pay TV platform, which has 504,000 subscribers.

One new episode will be offered per week, said Laura Wendt, vp and managing director of Walt Disney Television International (Southeast Asia).

This is the third local adaptation of the format in Asia Pacific. The first two were in Australia and China.

Disney Mobile Xtra costs S$5.35 ($3.80) per month for unlimited downloads.
