Disney titles reign over foreign boxoffice
'Up' leads the charge with $12.3 millionWith four titles generating nearly $34 million, Disney dominated the foreign circuit on the weekend with "Up" leading a largely slow-moving pack by bringing in $12.3 million from 3,700 screens in 25 territories, pushing its total offshore boxoffice gross to $214.2 million and its worldwide tally to $506 million.
Playing overseas since May 29, "Up" has run a marathon race that suddenly turned into a sprint. The weekend was the second consecutive stanza that the Pixar animated title has finished No. 1 on the foreign circuit. It opened in first place in Norway, and remained No. 1 in holdovers in Germany and Australia.
Opening No. 2 -- as it did in its domestic debut -- was Disney's sci-fi thriller "Surrogates," starring Bruce Willis, which drew $12.2 million from 1,590 screens in 10 markets sparked by a strong first-place ranking in Russia ($5 million from 550 locations). A No. 3 opening was registered in the U.K. ($1.5 million from 356 sites) and a No. 2 bow in Spain ($2 million from 317 locations).
In the U.K., MGM's "Fame" opened a dominant No. 1 with $3.8 million drawn from 459 sites for a solid per-screen average of $8,315. In Australia, the musical update premiered No. 2 to $1.5 million from 227 locations.
Finishing third on the weekend was the Weinstein Co./Universal's "Inglourious Basterds," which nabbed $8.3 million from 2,573 locations in 40 territories for an international total of $129.8 million. The global tally for director Quentin Tarantino's World War II drama stands at $244.2 million, which is expected to top to $250 million by the coming weekend.
No. 4 was "District 9," the sci-fi drama being handled by Sony and local distributors overseas. Its weekend tally from all territories came to $6.1 million for an international cume to date of $56.5 million.
Fifth was New Line/Warners' "The Final Destination," which scared up $5.8 million from 2,400 locations in 39 markets for a cume (from all distributors) of $84.5 million. "The Ugly Truth," Sony's romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, came up with $5.7 million from 2,615 screens in 51 territories for a cume of $54.8 million.
Sony's subway action drama "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" nudged its overseas cume to $70 million thanks to a $5.5 million weekend at 2,367 screens in 47 territories. Disney's Jerry Bruckheimer-produced animation outing "G-Force" pushed its international cume to $92.4 million thanks to a $5.3 million weekend at 2,147 sites in 35 markets.
Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs," an animation title about food falling from the sky, drew $4.9 million in its second overseas weekend, lifting its early overseas cume to $13.5 million.
Disney's fourth film out overseas, "The Proposal," a romantic comedy with Sandra Bullock, opened No. 1 in France ($2.3 million from 323 sites) and generated $4 million overall from 1,600 screens in 37 territories for a cume of $140.7 million.
Fox's hugely successful "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" moved its overseas cume to $681 million thanks to a $2.2 million weekend at 1,200 screens in 12 markets. 20th Century Fox's "(500) Days of Summer" lifted its cume to $9.2 million after a $1.4 million weekend at 557 sites in five markets.
Summit International's introduction of "Baaria," director Giuseppe Tornatore's autobiographical drama which opened this year's Venice Film Festival, drew the top spot in Italy (and also played Italian-speaking Switzerland) for a total gross of $3.4 million generated from 514 screens.
In Japan, manga-based "20th Century Boys: Chapter 3" continued a dominant No. 1 with $1.4 million in its fifth round at 322 locations, for a market cume of $43 million. In Germany, Fox/Majestic Filmverhleih opened "Wuestenblume" (Desert Flower), based on Waris Dirie's best-selling book about a young Somalian woman who survived an extremely harsh upbringing to become an American supermodel. The gross was $1.6 million from 358 sites.
In France, Pathe's "L'affaire farewell," a Cold War thriller from director Christian Carion, opened No. 2 with $1.9 million from 457 locations. Another local-language newcomer was Wild Bunch Distribution's "Le dernier pour la route," a drama from director Philippe Godeau, which bowed at No. 7 with $822,360 from 201 dates. TFM's No. 4-ranked comedy "Neuilly sa mere" has a market cume of $18.9 million over seven stanzas.
Other international cumes: Universal's "Funny People," $14.1 million; Warners' "The Hangover," $182.1 million; Sony's "Julie & Julia," $8 million; Paramount's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," $150 million; Universal's "De Storm," $1.8 million (over 11 days in the Netherlands and Belgium); Fox's "Aliens in the Attic," $27.7 million; Universal's "9," $5 million (in eight Universal territories only); Fox's "Jennifer's Body," $936,036 (from openers in Spain, Puerto Rico and Iceland); Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," $193.3 million; DreamWorks/Universal's "The Soloist," $2.3 million; Universal's "Public Enemies," $98.7 million; Paramount's "Imagine That," $4.7 million; and Universal's "Land of the Lost," $17.4 million.
