Disney's David Oyelowo Drama, 'Queen of Katwe,' Gets Release Date

Disney has put the David Oyelowo starrer Queen of Katwe on its schedule.

The studio will open the film on Sept. 23, 2016, in limited release and will expand it a week later, on Sept. 30. On Sept. 23, it will open alongside The Magnificent Seven and the animated picture Storks.

Lupita Nyong’o and newcomer Madina Nalwanga also star.

Directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding), Queen of Katwe centers on a young girl (Nalwanga) selling corn on the streets of rural Uganda, whose world rapidly changes when she is introduced to the game of chess and, as a result of the support she receives from her family and community, is instilled with the confidence and determination she needs to pursue her dream of becoming an international chess champion.

William Wheeler (The Hoax) adapted the screenplay from Tim Crothers' book of the same name.
