Dolan film chosen as Canada's Oscar pick

'J'ai Tue Ma Mere' to compete in foreign-language race

TORONTO -- Xavier Dolan's semi-autobiographical drama "J'ai Tue Ma Mere" (I Killed My Mother) has been picked as Canada's entry for the best foreign-language Oscar competition.

The Quebecois film, which portrays a 16-year-old boy who has a personality conflict with his mother to the point of hating her, before rekindling their relationship, bowed in the Cannes Directors Fortnight program before playing at the Toronto International Film Festival.

In Cannes, Dolan's debut feature won the Art Cinema Award, the SACD Prize for best French-language feature film and the Regards Jeune 2009 Prize.

Dolan, a 20-year-old filmmaker, wrote, directed and stars in the coming-of-age picture.
