Donald Glover Wears Custom Gucci to Emmys
It's vaudeville-inspired, says stylist Ilaria Urbinati.
Atlanta star Donald Glover arrived at the 2018 Emmys on Tuesday in a custom Gucci suit inspired by a vintage photo, says stylist Ilaria Urbinati.
"I liked the idea of doing a non tux on Donald, and and the idea of a vaudevillian-looking stripe," notes Urbinati, who took cues from an old snapshot of a man in a striped suit and a bowtie. The multihyphenate artist, who is currently on tour under his rap moniker Childish Gambino, didn't have time for fittings, so Urbinati went the route of a custom look with the brand, which has dressed Glover before at the Met Gala, Cannes and the Solo New York premiere.
A pair of square-toed black patent Jimmy Choo shoes rounded out the look — a style that Urbinati has never put on the red carpet until now. "Everything comes back around," she says.
"We're big fans of Gucci, and they're big fans of Donald," she's told THR before. "There's a good creative effort there, so I like working with them as much as I can."
Glover was nominated in four categories for his work on the FX series Atlanta, including outstanding directing for a comedy series, outstanding writing for a comedy series and outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for his role as Earnest Marks. The show, for which Glover also serves as an executive producer, was also nominated in the outstanding comedy series category. He was also up for an award for outstanding guest actor in a comedy series for hosting NBC’s Saturday Night Live.
The 70th annual Emmy Awards aired live on Monday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on NBC.
