Other highlights include David Fincher's new Netflix series 'Mindhunter' and Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett and artist Julian Rosefeldt discussing their video installation 'Manifesto.'

A day after it bowed in Venice to widespread critical acclaim, Alexander Payne's Downsizing has been named as one of the headline gala screenings at the upcoming BFI London Film Festival.

With Andy Serkis' directorial debut Breathe already announced as the opening film, Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri as the closer and Battle of the Sexes another gala screening, Thursday saw the rest of the lineup (totaling 242 films, including 128 shorts) revealed.

Joining Downsizing on the list of gala screenings are Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool, starring Annette Bening and Jamie Bell; Saul Dibb's adaptation of Journey's End, Yorgos Lanthimos' Cannes-bower The Killing of a Sacred Deer and Last Flag Flying from Richard Linklater. Guillermo del Toro will bring his hotly anticipated The Shape of Water, starring Sally Hawkins, while Lynne Ramsay's Cannes-winning You Were Never Really Here and Dees Rees' Mudbound will also get the red carpet treatment.

Among the series of talks — called LFF Connects — is a conversation between Cate Blanchett and artist Julian Rosefeldt about their collaboration on the 13-channel video installation Manifesto, having its European premiere at the festival. David Fincher, bringing his new Netflix series Mindhunter to the event, will discuss his return to the small screen, while Takashi Miike, Nitin Sawhney and Ian McEwan will also give talks.

Other special screenings at the festival will include Miike's Blade of the Immortal, Noah Baumbach's The Meyerowitz Stories, Dominic Cooke's On Chesil Beach, Michel Hazanavicius' Redoubtable and Todd Haynes Wonderstruck
