Lord Grantham's all for speeding off in an open-top car and leaving the kids to deal with all the problems.

With the end of Downton Abbey edging closer, speculation about the finale of the phenomenally successful British period drama has already started in earnest amongst fans — and, it seems, amongst the cast.

Sensing the building anticipation, Masterpiece has released a short video of key members of the Downton cast revealing their fantasy endings for the series, some of which would be enough to cause a major social scandal.

Hugh Bonneville, who plays patriarch Lord Grantham, would love to see his character and Lady Grantham go all Thelma & Louise, jumping into an open-top car and racing off to the French Riviera, leaving their children with the seemingly endless problems both of the Downton estate and the Grantham family. "Stuff the estate, stuff the children, stuff all the problems!" says Bonneville.

Laura Carmichael, who plays Lady Edith, would like to see her character continue her passion for writing, as well as being a thoroughly modern women.

And what of the people who really run Downton? Under-butler Thomas, played by Rob James-Collier, would love to see his character finally find love with the right man, even if it meant keeping it a secret.

The redoubtable Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol) is also keen on finding people who love her for who she is, and Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan) can't see herself retiring completely.
