Star Kevin Costner spent time with producer-director Ivan Reitman on their big night.

Director Ivan Reitman and co-star Josh Pence praised Costner, who stars as the Cleveland Browns GM in the film, which opens Friday.

Monday night's L.A. premiere of Summit's upcoming football film Draft Day also resembled a tailgate celebration as sports fans cheered on the stars, who walked a green carpet marked with white lines to resemble a football field.

The pigskin-themed event was held at the Regency Bruin Theater, where a crowd of enthusiastic fans cheered as team players Kevin Costner and Jennifer Garner hit the turf.

Garner wasn’t shy about her die-hard love of sports.

“When it’s the Patriots or the Red Sox, I stop everything," she said. "I eat in front of the TV. The world revolves around the game."

Costner, who's no stranger to sports films (Bull Durham, Field of Dreams), said in his house, his kids are the athletes. "You have look out in the hallway before you walk into it, because balls are flying," he said.

The movie, which hits theaters Friday, focuses on the professional and personal life of Costner's Cleveland Browns GM on the first day of the NFL draft, as he tries to trade for the No. 1 pick. Garner plays his girlfriend, raving of her co-star, "Kevin is a dreamboat."

Director Ivan Reitman also praised Costner, saying, “He’s a leader. He’s like Gary Cooper. He’s the kind of guy that men want to follow, and trust."

On set, actor Josh Pence (who plays a hopeful athlete waiting to get drafted in the film) threw the football around with Costner. “It was a very surreal moment for me,” he said, “At the time, I was like, ‘I don’t even know if he knows who I am.'”

Teammates (or castmates) who also took the field Monday night included Frank Langella, Terry Crews, Ellen Burstyn, Chadwick Boseman, Tom Welling, Griffin Newman, Patrick St. Esprit, David Ramsey, Wade Williams and Wallace Langham.

A screening immediately followed the green carpet, where the audience cheered throughout what seemed like the movie’s entirety. When the film ended, there was a roar of applause, and even a “Cost-ner, Cost-ner” chant that mirrored the roar of the crowd at a football stadium.

An afterparty, sponsored by Budweiser, closed the evening. Two large screens played football clips, while guests mingled over cocktails, Cleveland chili, wings and pizza.

Other guests included actors Sam Page (House of Cards) and Ernie Hudson (Ghostbusters) and athletes like Mike Tyson and Laila Ali.

The film was written by Scott Rothman and Rajiv Joseph.
