'Duck Dynasty' Star Phil Robertson Appears in Ads for Nephew Running for Congress
Zach Dasher is trying to unseat Rep. Vance McAllister, whom the A&E reality show stars backed last year
The stars of A&E's Duck Dynasty are lending their support to Republican congressional candidate Zach Dasher, who also happens to be Duck Dynasty patriarch Phil Robertson's nephew.
Dasher is running to represent Louisiana's 5th District, a seat currently held by fellow Republican Vance McAllister, whom the Duck Dynasty clan backed just last year when he won his seat in a special election, with the Robertsons' support earning Willie Robertson a ticket to the 2014 State of the Union.
The Robertsons reportedly broke with McAllister after a video was released showing the married congressman kissing a woman who was not his wife.
Phil Robertson is starring in two TV ads for Dasher.
“On Tuesday, Miss Kay and I are voting for Zach Dasher,” Robertson says in one ad. “He loves his family, he’s got a servant’s heart, he knows his Bible. He is a good man. We vetted him.”
In another, Robertson says, "Hey, Louisiana, Bibles and guns brought us here, and Bibles and guns will keep us here. Zach Dasher believes in both. That's why I'm voting for him."
Eighty thousand Louisiana phones also received robocalls from Si Robertson (aka "Uncle Si"), paid for by Tea Party group The Madison Project, ABC News reports.
“We need to elect a man that totes the Bible and believes in God. That’s what this country was founded on — God and the Bible,” Si Robertson says in the call, according to ABC News. “There’s a war going on. If you doubt that, look what’s going on in Houston, Texas, all right?”
There are several opponents, in addition to Dasher, challenging McAllister, and the race doesn't have a clear front-runner, ABC News reported. Louisiana's nonpartisan "jungle primary" system also means that voters might not know the final results of the race until December. If no one candidate gets a majority of the votes on Nov. 4, the election will proceed to a December runoff between the two candidates with the most votes.
