'Dunya and Desi' is Dutch Oscar entry

Holland Film selects teenage cultural drama

AMSTERDAM -- Teenage drama "Dunya and Desie" has been selected as the Dutch Oscar entry for best foreign-language film, Holland Film said Thursday.

The production, directed by Dana Nechustan, deals with the friendship between a Dutch and a Moroccan girl in Amsterdam. Together they face cultural differences and unwanted pregnancies.

The leading characters are played by Eva van de Wijdeven and Emmy winner Maryam Hassouni, who was the Dutch Shooting Star at this year's Berlin Film Festival.

"Dunya and Desie," based on a local TV series by NPS, is produced by Lemming Film and had its world premiere in February at the Berlinale.
