Dutch boxoffice weathers competition

Tracking shows growth despite popular sporting events

AMSTERDAM -- Cinema attendance in the Netherlands is up 3% this year compared with 2007, industry bodies NVB and NVF said Tuesday.

The growth -- tracked over 34 weeks -- is considered remarkable due to heavy competition from such events as the Tour de France, the European Soccer Championships and the Beijing Olympics.

The biggest boxoffice hits during the period measured were "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," with 4.4 million euros ($6.4 million); "Mamma Mia!" with 3.7 million euros ($5.4 million); and "The Dark Knight," with 3.7 million euros ($5.4 million).
