DVD piracy continues to increase

Sales of bootlegged discs went up 8% this year

With black market sales of bootlegged DVD movies costing Hollywood studios about $6.1 billion in lost revenue annually, illegal copying of pre-recorded DVDs (primarily TV programming) increased 8% in the first six months of 2008, according to a new report.

In an online survey of more than 5,000 consumers from the U.S. and the U.K., 33% of respondents (largely 18- to 24-year-old males) said they had copied DVD movies, according to London-based Futuresource Consulting Ltd.

The report found, not surprisingly, that new release movies prevailed among copied content.
