E! staying up late with 'Chelsea' strip

E! Entertainment Television is ramping up its late-night programming with a new strip featuring comedian Chelsea Handler, who starred in the network's "The Chelsea Handler Show."

E! said the new show, titled "Chelsea Lately," will take an "irreverent" look at the hot topics of the day. The hourlong strip, set to debut in July, also will feature guests, comedic field packages and viewer call-ins.

"Comedy works for E! in late-night, so the launch of a new series with Chelsea Handler is the perfect fare for our viewers as we celebrate summer," E! executive vp programming development Lisa Berger said. "Chelsea brings her unique wit and perspective on pop culture that is a perfect fit for E! and we know viewers will welcome the chance to get a daily dose of her new show this summer."

Handler is on a national stand-up tour and has performed at such festivals as the Montreal Comedy Festival and the HBO Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colo. Her first stand-up special, "Comedy Central Presents Chelsea Handler," debuted March 9. Handler's other credits include a starring role on Oxygen's "Girls Behaving Badly."

She also has written two books: "My Horizontal Life" and "Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelsea," the latter of which is being published in the fall by Simon Spotlight Entertainment.

Handler is repped by WMA; 3 Arts Entertainment, an executive producer on "Chelsea Lately"; and attorney Matt Johnson.
