EC looks into Eutelsat-China issues

Eutelsat says technical problem caused loss of signal

BRUSSELS -- The European Commission is investigating European satellite operator Eutelsat's failure to broadcast a private Chinese channel's signal for two months.

Paris-based Eutelsat, one of the world's three main satellite operators, claimed the loss of signal was due to a technical problem.

The company denied any prejudice against NTDTV, which calls itself the only Chinese channel not linked to the Communist government.

But NTDTV -- backed by the International Federation of Journalists -- claims Eutelsat "is hiding behind technical mumbo-jumbo."

NTDTV says that Eutelsat hopes to sign contracts with the Chinese government and has succumbed to pressure.
