EFA docu prize for Cambodian 'Paper'
EmptyCOLOGNE, Germany -- "Paper Cannot Wrap Up Embers," Rithy Panh's portrait of Cambodian prostitutes, has won this year's Prix Arte for best European documentary, the European Film Academy announced Tuesday.
This is the second EFA award for the Cambodian-born, French-based Panh. His breakthrough film, "S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine," won the Prix Arte in 2003.
The EFA jury, made up of Swiss Films promotion head Francine Bruecher, New Israeli Film Foundation director David Fisher and German producer Philip Groening, called "Paper" a "near Brechtian documentary ... here is the voice of a community who usually remain mute."
The EFA, together with French-German public broadcaster Arte, will present the award during the 20th European Film Awards in Berlin Dec. 1.
