The Republican president-elect secured 288 electoral votes to win the presidential race.

Minutes after Donald Trump was announced as president-elect on Tuesday night, the New York Daily News teased Wednesday morning's cover with a dark storm brewing above the White House.

The cover, which boasts the headline "House of Horrors," was tweeted along with the caption: "Trump seizes Divided States of America."

Trump's triumph over Hillary Clinton will end eight years of Democratic dominance of the White House and threatens to undo major achievements of President Barack Obama. He's pledged to act quickly to repeal Obama's landmark healthcare law, revoke the nuclear agreement with Iran and rewrite important trade deals with other countries, particularly Mexico and Canada.

Global stock markets and U.S. stock futures plunged deeply, reflecting investor alarm over what a Trump presidency might mean for the economy and trade.
