This Is How Elisabeth Moss Supported the ACLU Through Fashion at the Golden Globes

With the help of stylist Karla Welch, the 'Handmaid's Tale' star kicks off a new philanthropic initiative co-founded by costume designer Arianne Phillips.

When Elisabeth Moss hit the Golden Globes red carpet in a short navy Christian Dior Haute Couture number paired with Neil Lane jewels, Tamara Mellon shoes and a Roger Vivier bag, the Golden Globe nominee didn’t just look good: she was doing plenty of good, too.

Styled by Karla Welch, Moss’ head-to-toe look benefits the American Civil Liberties Union through a new philanthropic initiative called RAD (short for Red Carpet ADvocacy), which launched at the Golden Globes with The Handmaid’s Tale star.

Founded by Oscar-nominated costume designer Arianne Phillips and consultant Carineh Martin (who cut her teeth at Prada, Christian Dior and Estee Lauder companies), the initiative is designed to help raise money through partnerships between talent, brands and non-profits, starting with the red carpet.


All brands sported by Moss on the Golden Globes red carpet will make donations on behalf of Moss to the ACLU.

Phillips, who designed the Time’s Up pin widely seen on last year’s Golden Globes, also envisioned the #TimesUpx2 bracelets and ribbons carried by the likes of Good Place actress D'Arcy Carden and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan on this year’s carpet.

“Elisabeth stands up for what she believes in. She has an incredible platform and through her producing and acting has become such a storyteller of our times,” says Welch, who learned about RAD through Phillips and Martin over the holidays. “Of course I told them I’d love to be involved and help in anyway I can.” In 2018, Welch's own collaboration with Levi's benefited Everytown for Gun Safety.

“I’m all for people making endorsements — yes please! But I feel like we can all leverage our business dealings for betterment of society, “ says the celebrity stylist. “It’s big business, and we are so lucky to be in these positions. Let’s give back!”
