Emmy winner Emi to head PIFF jury

New Currents jury includes Murali Nair, 'Lost's' Kim

SEOUL -- Wada Emi, a renowned Japanese costume designer, who received an Emmy Award for Best Costume Design for Julie Taymor’s television opera “Oedipus Rex,” will head the Pusan International Film Festival jury for New Currents, a selection of films by emerging Asian directors.

Separately, the festival’s Flash Forward, launched last year for talented non-Asian directors, will be led by Sundance Film Festival director John Cooper.

Other jurors for New Currents include Korean actress Kim Yunjin of the ABC series “Lost”; Taiwan actress Yang Kuei-mei; Camera d'Or-winning director Murali Nair; and Christoph Terechte who leads the International Forum of New Cinema of Berlin Film Festival. Notable jurors for Flash Forward include the Russian directors Alex Popogrebsky.

The festival also appointed Sean Farnel, the director of programming for Canada’s HotDocs Documentary Film Festival and Rithy Panh, a Cambodian director, as jurors for the PIFF Mecenat Award for the Wide Angle section.

For this year's NetPac Award the jurors include Nestor Jardin, director of the Philippines’s Cinemalaya, and Martine Theoruanne, festival director at Vesoul Festival in France.

PIFF runs from October 7-15 on Haeundae Beach in South Korea's second-largest city.
