Emmys 2012: THR Predicts the Best Dressed Contenders
UPDATED: The nominees are starting to get all dolled up in their cocktail wear for weekend, but Sunday is the read D (for dress) Day.
The title of Emmy's Best Dressed this year will certainly be hard won (as there's some heavy and heady competition), but don't expect the most famous woman to win -- nor even the most famous designer.
Nicole Kidman is nominated as Lead Actress in a MiniSeries or Movie for Hemingway & Gellhorn, so we can be sure to see some serious grown-up movie star glam at the Emmys for a change. We expect Kidman to wear a gown from one of her friends, like Jean Paul Gautier or L'Wren Scott, her stylist turned designer. On the other hand, Kidman could turn out in Chanel couture, which would be unusual at the Emmys unless your name is Sarah Jessica Parker.
Kidman's presence will up the fashion ante for every nominee and presenter. Last year, Juliana Margulies and Vampire Diaries' young star Nina Dobrev brought the real glamour (Dobrev was without a doubt best dressed, with a little help from a scarlet Donna Karan mermaid gown that Dobrev's stylist Ilaria Urbinati helped whip into shape).
We're seriously looking forward to what Dobrev wears this year, as her biggest competition is herself! We hope she goes for another strong color and a really dramatic shape -- and with co-star Ian Sommerhalder as her date, she'll definitely have the best accessory.
Christina Hendricks, a favorite in the best supporting actress category, looked really great in a floral Jenny Packham at the Creative Arts Emmys last week. We're not sure how she can top that, but she'll surely try, as she's favored to win.
Julianne Moore, a favorite to win for Game Change, has two close designer friends: Tom Ford and Alber Elbaz of Lanvin. Neither would be a bad choice, since she'll certainly be doing something unusual and highly designed (more unique and arty than bombshell).
Claire Danes will be showing her pregnancy, but she's on such a great fashion run -- and also favored to win for Homeland -- that she could wind up best dressed even with a baby bump. She's developed a really sophisticated sense of style over the years, usually simple but incredibly flattering. Worth noting: a showing pregnancy certainly didn't hurt Natalie Portman at the Oscars.
January Jones and Margulies are predictably glamourous -- thin, beautiful and always dramatic. The new girls Jessica Pare, Zooey Deschanel (new to tv, anyway) and Michelle Dockery might be the most fun to watch, as we don't know how they're going to play it -- fun, colorful or somber? Expect Dockery to go fairly contemporary, as her Lady Mary Crawley is always in her Edwardian best. And we can almost predict right now what Sofia Vergara will wear: strapless, mermaid shape, very sexy, with her hair down and a huge fishtail. Hey, if it's working, why fix it? Same goes for Lea Michele: expect over the top flamenco style and a large amount of posing.
