Emmys: John Lithgow Wins Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

'The Crown' star thanked Winston Churchill, whom he portrays on the series, in his acceptance speech.

John Lithgow won the Emmy for best supporting actor in a drama series on Sunday night for his performance on The Crown.

The actor beat out Jonathan Banks from Better Call Saul, David Harbour from Stranger Things, Ron Cephas Jones from This Is Us, Michael Kelly from House of Cards, Mandy Patinkin from Homeland and Jeffrey Wright from Westworld

"This is fantastic. I feel so lucky to have won this in the company of my fellow nominees," Lithgow said at the podium. "The Crown just keeps on giving — this is just the last of its gifts."

The actor also thanked Winston Churchill, whom he portrays on the series, as he concluded his speech: "In these crazy times, his life reminds us of what courage in the government looks like."

The Primetime Emmy Awards are being handed out at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. Stephen Colbert is hosting the ceremony, airing live on CBS.
