Endemol Vet Lands Top Scripted Gig at ITV Studios America (Exclusive)

Philippe Maigret, ITV Studios America

Philippe Maigret is named president of scripted programming for ITV Studios America.

ITV Americas has found its new scripted leader.

Endemol vet Philippe Maigret has been appointed president of scripted programming at the TV giant's U.S. arm. The news comes just two weeks after ITV Studios America president Orly Adelson exited just 18 months into the job — and some eight months after her boss, ITV Studios US Group CEO Paul Buccieri left for a key role at A+E

Maigret stepped down at rival Endemol earlier this year, after a four-year tenure in which he oversaw the creation of its drama production studio, which produced such shows as Low Winter Sun, Red Widow and Kingdom. His appointment at ITV comes as the company has been making an aggressive push to expand its U.S. production footprint, with a desire to amp up its own scripted output.

After a string of acquisitions by its parent company, including Talpa and Pawn Stars' Leftfield Entertainment., ITVS is already said to be the largest independent supplier of unscripted shows in the U.S. (ITV called off plans to purchase The Weinstein Co.'s TV division earlier this year.)

Maigret, who will remain based in Los Angeles and is due to begin his post Aug. 10, brings with him a lengthy resume, with earlier credits including senior vp of business strategy and development at Disney, a stint as a distribution exec in DreamWorks’ international TV department and a role in business operations for StudioCanal. ITV brass is said to have first approached him about the gig shortly after he left Endemol in March.

"This is the next step in fulfilling our ambition to build a global scripted business," said Kevin Lygo, ITV Studios managing director in a statement. "We have already made significant progress and with Philippe at the helm in the US we’ll accelerate that growth. His track record is very impressive, not least in launching a scripted business and quickly turning it into a leading independent producer.”

Maigret added that the scale of ITV Studios America's operations, coupled with its distribution footprint and resources, offered a "powerful platform to build a creatively and commercially ambitious U.S. scripted business."

For Adelson’s part, her exit earlier this month caught many by surprise, given that the former Dick Clark Productions exec had joined ITV only a year and a half earlier. In that role, she too was focused on building out ITV's scripted portfolio. Adelson, who was hired by Buccieri less than a year before he departed, will segue to producing live and reality TV with a renewed focus on scripted.
