Eng short to open Golden Roosters

BEIJING -- Producers of China's top film awards selected Chinese-American filmmaker Dayyan Eng to open its broadcast with a short film this month, Eng told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday.

Chinese stars Zhang Ziyi, Ge You and Liu Ye will appear in the short that will precede the Golden Roosters, Eng said, with shooting beginning "in a few days."

The short will be humorous, but Eng did not disclose plot details. The filmmaker, who splits his time between China and the U.S., said he was approached by the China Film Academy and state broadcaster China Central Television to do the project.

"I told them I was busy in preproduction with my new feature, so I wasn't sure if I had time, but they insisted, and the more they told me about it the more I thought this would be a cool thing to do," Eng said.

"They said they wanted me to write and direct it because they felt my sense of humor and sensibility was "perfect" for what they were looking for," Eng said.

Eng's short film "Bus 44" won the special jury prize at the 2001 Venice Film Festival.

The Golden Roosters are China's top film awards. The awards ceremony is taped for broadcast on CCTV, and this year's ceremony will be broadcast Oct. 27.
