Enrique Gonzalez Macho Voted President of Spanish Film Academy

The independent filmmaker owns distributor Alta Films and the Renoir theater chain.

MADRID -- Independent producer, distributor and exhibitor Enrique Gonzalez Macho was elected president of the Spanish Film Academy Sunday in a vote that fills a vacancy created when Alex de la Iglesia announced in February he would step down.

One of Spain’s most veteran players, winner of the 1998 National Film Award and a knight of the French Order of Arts and Letters, Gonzalez Macho owns art house distributor Alta Films along with the Renoir theater chain, specializing in subtitled fare.

The vote, held Sunday, saw Gonzalez Macho, accompanied by actress Marta Etura and director-scriptwriter Judith Colell on the ticket, receive 256 votes to Luna’s 101 and 19 votes abstentions.
