Eros, Shankar prep 'Robot'

NEW DELHI -- London-based Eros International will produce "Robot," to be directed by S. Shankar and featuring South Indian Tamil-language star Rajnikanth. The director and actor teamed on last summer's hit "Sivaji: The Boss," which was distributed worldwide by Eros and grossed $25 million.

An Eros-Ayngaran spokesperson said Tuesday that "Shankar and Rajnikanth will be planning a press conference soon to announce the details of the film including when the film begins production and its release date." Local media reports put the production budget at $25 million, which would make it one of the biggest budget movies ever made in the region. But this could not be confirmed by the spokesperson.

"Robot" -- which will be released in Tamil and multiple Indian languages -- will see Shankar working again with film composer A.R. Rahman.

Ayngaran International head of operations Kavitha Pradhan told The Hollywood Reporter: "The film's official budget is not yet finalized. Shooting will commence in April and will take 18 months to complete."

Eros International has been a pioneer in distributing Indian films worldwide for three decades and its catalog now includes more than 1,300 titles including co-productions such as 2007's "Gandhi, My Father."

Established in 1987 in London, Ayngaran focused on distributing Tamil films overseas and the company's library now includes over 1,500 titles.

Over the last year, Eros had a successful run at the boxoffice, grossing more than $50 million thanks to hits like "Namstey London" (Hello London) and "Partner."
