ESPN Fires Radio Announcer Ron Franklin After Comment to Female Colleague
The broadcaster had called Jeannine Edwards ‘sweet baby’ and used an expletive.
NEW YORK – Walt Disney's ESPN has fired radio announcer Ron Franklin after remarks to a sideline reporter before the broadcast of the Chick-fil-A Bowl caused him to be suspended from calling the Fiesta Bowl, the New York Times reported.
“Based on what occurred last Friday, we have ended our relationship with him,” a spokesman told the paper.
During a conversation that sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards was having with another announcer during a production meeting, Franklin reportedly said: “Listen to me, sweet baby, let me tell you something.” When she suggested his tone was condescending, Franklin reportedly used an obscenity.
During a game in 2005, he had called another female sideline reporter “sweetheart.”
Franklin, 68, had worked at the sports network for nearly 24 years, primarily as a play-by-play announcer on college football and basketball games.
