Ethan Hawke's 'Maudie' to Open Vancouver Film Festival

Terrence Malick's Imax documentary 'Voyage of Time,' narrated by Brad Pitt, will close the 35th edition.

Aisling Walsh's Maudie, starring Ethan Hawke and Sally Hawkins, will open this year's Vancouver Film Festival, organizers said Wednesday.

And Terrence Malick's documentary, Voyage of Time: The Imax Experience, will close the 35th edition of the fest, which is set to run Sept. 29-Oct. 14.

Maudie stars Hawkins as the arthritic artist who overcame her physical disability to become one of Canada’s most famous folk artists, with Hawke playing her husband.

Maudie, a Canada-Ireland co-production which bowed in Telluride, also will screen in Toronto and open the Atlantic Film Festival in Halifax before heading to Vancouver. Voyage of Time, narrated by Brad Pitt, will screen in Vancouver after a world premiere in Toronto.

Vancouver fest programmers also have added I, Daniel Blake, the Cannes Palme d’Or winner, to its lineup of special presentations.
