Euro MPs vote for media ombudsmen

Ombudsmen for each of EU 27 member states

BRUSSELS -- The European Union should appoint media ombudsmen to ensure national markets remain open, competitive and independent, and media outlets free from state interference, Euro-MPs voted Tuesday in Brussels.

As new technologies, global competition and government pressures buffet the sector, the EU has a responsibility to foster a pluralistic and independent media, the European Parliament’s Culture Committee said.

The plan calls for ombudsmen in each of the EU's 27 member states.
