Europa 7 ruling delayed

Decision delayed until early June at latest

ROME -- The high-profile case over the fate of would-be Italian broadcaster Centro Europa 7 was delayed Tuesday hours before the deadline for a ruling.

The 11-year-old case is based on charges that Mediaset's Rete 4 illegally refused to give Centro Europa 7 access to its terrestrial frequencies. The refusal put Centro Europa 7 out of business, but the broadcaster could be resurrected if the state attorney in Rome rules that Rete 4 should become a pure satellite broadcaster as was first required in 1997.

The state attorney said the decision will now be made later this month or in early June.
