LONDON -- More European movies than ever will be backed to make a splash during the upcoming Shanghai International Film Festival with a boost from European Film Promotion.

The Eurozone promotion body, which gets funding from the European Union's MEDIA Program, said it is backing marketing campaigns from nine European sales agents and production banners across 13 titles.

EFP said that's "almost twice as many films in Shanghai" than last year's supported titles.

The Shanghai International Film Festival is one of three Asian industry events at which EFP offers support to professionals.

FSS project manager Susanna Davis noted that the number of applicants from Europe seeking support has rocketed. "We are therefore experiencing a growing interest of professionals from Europe to attend the festival and take advantage of the developing Chinese market," Davis said.

Films backed by FSS in competition during Shanghai include "Aching Hearts" by Nils Malmros (Denmark), "Chameleon" by Krisztina Goda (Hungary) and "Normal" by Julius Sevcik (Czech Republic/Macedonia).

European companies benefiting from the support include Sweden's NonStop Sales, Germany's Match Factory and Italy's Adriana Chiesa Enterprises.

The festival is set to run Saturday through June 21.
