'Evangelion' stays atop Japan boxoffice

Anime series rakes in more than twice as fast as original

TOKYO -- The latest theatrical installment of the "Evangelion" anime franchise, "Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance," has grossed ¥1.5 billion ($16 million) in its first 10 days to July 7.

Distributed by indie KlockWorx, and opening on only 120 screens, it has clocked a million admissions 2 1/2 times as fast as last year's "Evangelion 1: You Are (Not) Alone." It also looks certain to beat the first edition's ¥2 billion boxoffice total, pulled in over 4 months.

The weekend boxoffice top five remained unchanged from the previous weeks, with "Evangelion" in top spot, Toho's "Rookies" continuing strong in second place six weeks into its run, with a cumulative over ¥7 billion ($75 million.)

"Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" (Paramount) was in third after three weeks, and "The Summit: a Chronicle of Stones" (Toei) in fourth after four weeks in theaters. Sony's "Terminator Salvation" held on to fifth, also after four weeks' release.

There are two more "Evangelion" movies to come and a U.S. live-action project in the pipeline from ADV Films.
