The social network has also partnered with LeBron James, Vice and 'Saturday Night Live' to create immersive videos.

The latest Star Wars promotion on Facebook takes fans deeper into the world than ever before. That's because it's one of the first 360-degree videos to debut on the social network.

Facebook introduced the new video feature on Wednesday morning through videos produced by partners including Saturday Night Live, Vice and LeBron James

With the introduction of 360-degree video, Facebook users can now watch a clip from all angles. On desktop, users can pan through the video with their mouse. On mobile phones, they drag their finger across the screen or physically move the phone. In the Star Wars: Force Awakens clip, for example, the viewer can look any direction from the cockpit of a speeder as it races across the Jakku desert.

Cleveland Cavaliers star James, meanwhile, teamed up with Felix & Paul Studios to create LeBron James: Striving for Greatness, a five-episode series that will also be packaged as a standalone virtual reality experience for the Oculus platform. It's part of his Uninterrupted project produced with Bleacher Report.

"Along with updates from your friends and family, you will also be able to discover amazing new content on Facebook from media companies, organizations and individual creators," a Facebook blog post states.

Facebook is following in the steps of YouTube, which introduced support for 360-degree videos in March. The Mark Zuckerberg-led social network made its first big push into immersive storytelling with its acquisition of virtual reality headset maker Oculus in 2014. Although the 360-degree videos on the social network are not full-blown VR experiences, that kind of advancement that could happen over time. In the meantime, content creators who make 360-degree videos for Facebook can also render them into VR experiences for platforms like Oculus.

Support for 360 videos is rolling out first on Facebook's Android app and will come to the iOS app in the coming months.
