Fashion's Top Teenage Blogger Turns Performer for New York Fashion Week
Fifteen-year-old fashionista Tavi Gevinson is singing in a short film, and she'll perform the song in the midst of the New York collections for fall 2012.
When little Tavi Gevinson burst onto the fashion scene a few years ago, sophisticated magazine editors and serious fashion bloggers laughed.
A very young teenager writing about fashion? But Tavi is savvy (get it?) beyond her years -- way -- and not only that, she dresses in such a cool way that the New York fashion press -- about the bitchiest bunch you could ever get near, if you could stand it -- came to embrace her. Style is style, after all, no matter who it's on. Now she gets front row seats to shows, and is about as famous as Anna Della Russo and Alexa Chung for her individuated style and her recently acquired fashion chops.
But even this obviously is not enough for the ambitious Gevinson. Now her voice can be heard as an animated character in the seven-minute animated short, Cadaver, directed by Jonah Ansell. It also features the voices of Christopher Lloyd and Kathy Bates, about a dead man (a ghostly stick figure, really) who comes back to life to find his wife "cheating" on him.
Gevinson also sings in the short -- she lent her singing vocals to a cover of Neil Young's "Heart of Gold," a song twice her age, actually, that's played over the end credits. And she doesn't sound half bad, though she's no Sinead O'Connor.
But she'll be performing it live on Sunday, Feb. 12 to kick off New York Fashion Week for fall.
At 12:30 a.m. she'll sing "Heart of Gold," to be followed by a screening of Cadaver, all at the Standard Hotel in the East Village. Why so late? Well, the Grammy's are on earlier, but you know New Yorkers. Decadent to the core. But will her parents let her stay up that late?
