'Fast Five' Final Opening Weekend Number: $86.2 Million Domestic
That’s $3 million more than Universal’s Sunday estimate.
Fast Five is the gift that won’t stop giving for Universal. The action pic actually opened to $86.2 million at the domestic box office--$3 million more than the studio’s Sunday estimate of $83.6 million.
It’s common for a studio to overestimate a film’s weekend opening, but not to underestimate.
Fast Five broke a number of records. It’s the highest opening in Universal’s history (previous best Lost World: Jurassic Park at $72.1 million), and also the best April opening of all time.
Overseas, Fast Five grossed $45.9 million for the weekend, bringing its cume to $82 million and worldwide total to $168.2 million.
