Fatih Akin, Cristian Mungiu on Cannes duty

Will head Un Certain Regard, Europe Day

PARIS -- Fatih Akin and Cristian Mungiu, Festival de Cannes award winners in 2007, are set to head this year's Un Certain Regard jury and Europe Day, respectively, organizers said Monday.

Akin, who won the best screenplay award for "The Edge of Heaven" at last year's festival, will be joined by Indian journalist Anupama Chopra, Russian journalist Catherine Mtsitouridze, Egyptian critic Yasser Moheb and Spanish film center director Jose Maria Prado to vote on this year's crop of Un Certain Regard titles.

Mungiu, whose "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" won the Palme d'Or last year, will be back on the Croisette as ambassador of the sixth annual Europe Day on May 19.

Mungiu will meet with European cultural ministers to discuss this year's theme: "Cinema, Dianying Yan, Kino, Chalchitra, Cine: Building a World of Exchange." President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso will kick off the Europe Day ceremony.
