Feo Aladag's 'When We Leave' Takes Top Jury Prize in Victoria

The Austrian film about honor killings continues its festival circuit success.

TORONTO – Austrian filmmaker Feo Aladag’s When We Leave continued its winning ways on the weekend by taking the top jury prize at the Victoria Film Festival.

The drama about a Muslim woman fleeing her abusive husband’s family in Istanbul and uneasily reuniting with her own fundamentalist family in Berlin earlier won the Prix Lux, the European Parliament's honor for the best European film of the year.

The Sibel Kekilli-starring film from Independent Artists Filmproduktion was also honored at the Tribeca Film Festival and the German Film Awards.

Other Victoria winners: the best Canadian film prize went to Trigger, from director Bruce McDonald, while the top audiuence award went to Denis Villeneuve’s Incendies, Canada’s contender in the best foreign language film competition at the upcoming Oscars.
