First 'Fifty Shades Darker' Trailer Debuts Online

The James Foley-directed sequel starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson hits theaters in February.

The first trailer for the highly anticipated Fifty Shades of Grey sequel Fifty Shades Darker has debuted online. The preview, accompanied by a new slow-tempo version of Beyonce's "Crazy in Love," this time performed by Miguel, a callback to the first film's trailer, begins by highlighting the romance between Christian (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia (Dakota Johnson) before teasing various thriller aspects of the sequel.

The trailer also features both Christian and Ana donning the masquerade masks that have become a hallmark of previous previews, including the 19-second teaser for the trailer released on Monday.

Although Ana and Christian called it quits at the end of Grey, paparazzi photos that have surfaced of Dornan and Johnson filming the sequel suggest that the two could reconcile, and indeed, the trailer features Christian trying to win back Ana, with her explaining that this time she doesn't want any "rules" or "punishments."

But their romantic bliss is disrupted as Ana appears to be haunted by Christian's exes -- Kim Basinger's Elena "Mrs. Robinson" Lincoln, who makes an appearance in the trailer at a masquerade party the couple attends, and Bella Heathcote's Leila.

The film version of the next installment in E.L. James' erotic series was directed by James Foley, with James' husband, author and screenwriter Niall Leonard, adapting his wife's book for the big screen.

In addition to Basinger and Heathcote, Darker also features new cast members Eric Johnson, Tyler Hoechlin and Hugh Dancy, among others.

Universal chairman Donna Langley has called the follow-up "more of a thriller" than the first film. Indeed, reports indicate that Anastasia is threatened by both Heathcote's Leila and Johnson's Jack Hyde.

With a production budget of $40 million, Fifty Shades of Grey made more than $571 million at the global box office, making it one of the most profitable films of 2015.

Filming was recently completed on both Darker and its follow-up, Fifty Shades Freed.

Darker is set to hit theaters on Feb. 10, 2017.
