'Fifty Shades of Grey' Movie Release Date Set

The adaptation of the EL James novel will be directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson

Focus Features has set a release date of Aug. 1, 2014, for Fifty Shades of Grey, the high-profile adaptation of the EL James erotic novel.

The move, which has been expected since Universal chairman Adam Fogelson told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this year that he wanted the film ready for next summer, puts the steamy romance toward the end of the busiest movie season and not in direct competition with early summer blockbuster titles.

The film, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from a script by Kelly Marcel, will be released domestically by Focus with a worldwide release to follow from Universal Pictures International.

Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti are producing the movie with James. Focus and Universal paid $5 million in March 2012 for movie rights to the best-selling trilogy.
