'The Fighter' Knocks Out 'King's Speech' to Close Rotterdam
'The King's Speech' producers feared the fest screening could distract from its BAFTA and Oscar awards campaign.
COLOGNE, Germany -- David O'Russell's double Golden Globe-winning boxing drama and best picture Oscar nominee The Fighter has knocked out fellow best picture Oscar nominee The King's Speech as the closing film of the 40th Rotterdam International Film Festival.
The pugilist drama, which won best supporting actor Globes for Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, will close the 40th Rotterdam fest on Feb. 5.
A-Film Distribution will bow The Fighter in Holland March 24.
The King's Speech, which took the best actor Golden Globe for Colin Firth, was Rotterdam's first choice as closing film. But producers pulled the film, fearing the festival screening could distract from The King's Speech's BAFTA and Oscar awards campaigns.
