'Deutschland' directors

A who's who of German directing talent — including Tom Tykwer, Fatih Akin, Wolfgang Becker and Hans Weingartner — have signed on for "Deutschland '09," an episodic feature film intended as a snapshot of Germany's current social and political climate. Berlin-based Piffl Medien will release "Deutschland '09" next year.

Uni ups Berk

Julie Berk has been promoted to senior vp creative services at Universal. Berk, who was vp creative services, expands her responsibilities in all aspects of motion picture print advertising for Universal theatrical releases.

'Breakfast' time

Here! Films has acquired North American rights to the gay-themed family comedy "Breakfast With Scot," the opening-night selection of Los Angeles' Outfest 2008 film festival. Tom Cavanagh and Ben Shenkman play a straight-laced couple who end up with temporary custody of a flamboyant 11-year-old orphan (Noah Bernett). Here! sister company Regent Releasing will distribute Laurie Lynd's film in theaters in the fall.

Sundance FELLOWS

The Sundance Institute has tapped five fellows for its inaugural creative producing initiative: Alan T. Chan ("Quari"), Nekisa Cooper ("Pariah"), Diane Houslin ("Yelling to the Sky"), Sophia Lin ("Scoutmasters") and Joshua Zeman ("Forest Grove"). As part of their fellowship, producers will receive a preproduction grant, adviser mentorship and a stay at the institute's producing lab.
