Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne's new production company has a unique name and is staffed up. Shaye and Lynne unveiled Unique Pictures as the name of their shingle, which recently signed a three-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros. as part of the duo's compensation for losing the reins of New Line, the company they founded. No projects were announced, though the company's aim is to make two or three movies a year across a wide range of genres and budgets, with Warners handling marketing and distribution. Longtime New Line exec Mark Kaufman will help run the company.

SONY UPS Gargotta

Tommy Gargotta has been promoted to president of worldwide creative advertising at Sony Pictures, Valerie Van Galder and Marc Weinstock, co-presidents of worldwide theatrical marketing, said Thursday. Gargotta, who was senior vp creative advertising, will guide the creative marketing team in launching all motion pictures released by Columbia and Sony Pictures Animation.

Kicking the habit?

A group of California and showbiz officials is set to announce today a major Hollywood anti-smoking initiative. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Entertainment Industry Foundation chief Lisa Paulsen, the MPAA's Dan Glickman, Health and Human Services Secretary Kim Belshe and others will hold a news conference at 10:50 a.m. at the Kodak Theatre.
