Film We Like fills up on 'Empties'

TORONTO -- Canadian movie distributor Films We Like on Monday said it has acquired domestic rights to Jan Sverak's "Empties," the follow-up to the Czech director's Oscar-winning 1997 film "Koyla."

Ron Mann, co-founder of the Toronto-based boutique distributor, said he plans a November theatrical release for "Empties" following its Sept. 7 North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The bitter-sweet dramedy is the latest collaboration between Jan Sverak and his father, screenwriter-actor Zdenek Sverak, who plays a former literature teacher that takes a supermarket job to stave off retirement.

"Empties" earned the audience award at Karlovy Vary before going onto to bring in about $4 million in boxoffice on theatrical release in the Czech Republic.

Mann said he recently acquired the Czech film after first screening it in Cannes. He added that the date for the Canadian theatrical release is dependent on an American distribution deal being signed, possibly in Toronto.
