First Spanish province goes digital

Soria is test for terrestrial digital TV rollout

MADRID -- Spain's north-central province of Soria on Wednesday became the first region to switch entirely from analog to terrestrial digital television, which will extend to the entire country by April 2010.

Telecom authorities spent 3.2 million euros on publicity about the new system as well as subsidies to television owners to buy the necessary TDT boxes and modify antennas to receive about 20 channels.

"Soria was used as a test for the TDT rollout because it is the least-populated province," a government spokeswoman said.
