Five join 'Solomon Kane' cast

PARIS -- Max von Sydow, Pete Postlethwaite, Rachel Hurd-Wood, Alice Krige and Mackenzie Crook have joined the cast of adventure epic "Solomon Kane," producer Samuel Hadida said Tuesday.

James Purefoy ("Rome") will play the title role in the movie, which is adapted from the classic pulp story by Robert E. Howard, creator of "Conan the Barbarian." Michael J. Bassett ("Deathwatch") will direct from his own script for Hadida's Davis Films and Paul Berrow's Epic Tales. Shooting is set to start this month in Prague.

The first part in a planned trilogy, "Solomon Kane" is about a 16th century Puritan swordsman who learns that his actions have damned him. Determined to redeem himself, Kane swears to live a life of peace and goodness but is forced to fight once more when a dark power threatens the land. Von Sydow will portray Solomon's father.

International sales on "Solomon Kane" are being handled by Los Angeles-based Essential Entertainment.

In addition to "Solomon Kane," Davis Film is shooting "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus," written and directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer and Tom Waits.
