Focus, Quad team on 'Heartbreaker'

French movie to star Romain Duris, Vanessa Paradis

PARIS -- Focus Features International will continue its love affair with Gallic cinema with a new French-language romantic comedy "Heartbreaker," co-starring Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis and co-produced by Paris-based production house Quad, Focus said Thursday.

"Heartbreaker" is Focus' latest romance in French, following Joann Sfar's Serge Gainsbourg biopic "Gainsbourg, je t'aime, moi non plus" which is in postproduction.

In "Heartbreaker," French megastar Duris plays a ladies man who is hired by family members to break up unsuitable love pairings, but struggles when he's asked to break up the perfect couple.

The film, directed by Pascal Chaumeil and written by screenwriting trio Laurent Zeitoun, Jeremy Doner and Yohan Gromb, began shooting in June in Monaco, Paris and Morocco and is set for a 2010 release in Gaul through Universal.

Universal holds all French theatrical and home video distribution rights for the project. Gregoire Melin's sales company Kinology will handle all international sales for the film.

Focus Features International's co-CEO Christian Grass and Quad's Nicolas Duval Adassovsky announced production on Thursday. "Heartbreaker" is produced by Duval Adassovsky and Yann Zenou of Quad alongside writer Zeitoun. Executive vp international Clare Wise and director of European creative JJ Lousberg will oversee the production for Focus.
