Fogelson, Egan move up at Universal
EmptyUniversal has promoted Adam Fogelson to president of marketing and distribution and Eddie Egan to president of marketing in a bid to closer align marketing and distribution at the studio.
The move follows Monday's news that the marketing and distribution at Rogue Pictures, Focus Features' genre arm, will be moved under Universal's umbrella.
Nikki Rocco continues in her position as president of distribution -- the first female to hold that position at a major studio -- and will report to Fogelson.
"Marketing and distribution are twin disciplines, and they are more and more -- in timing and integration -- getting to be inseparable in our strategy," Universal Pictures chairman Marc Shmuger said.
When Shmuger was vice chairman, both marketing and distribution fell under his domain, but the connection was lost when he took over as chairman.
"Marketing and distribution would speak in one voice and make decisions in a unified way that would never serve any departmental interest but always serve the overall company. I think that's what the new structure helps us do."
Commenting on Rocco, he said: "Her role has not changed in any way. Her value at the company is as great as ever. She is part of the core decision-making team here."
In his newly created position, Fogelson, who has been president of marketing since 2002, assumes executive oversight of Universal's domestic marketing and distribution divisions and also will supervise the marketing and distribution of Rogue Pictures, the studio's specialty genre label. He will report to Shmuger and Universal co-chairman David Linde.
Egan, with his promotion to marketing president, now directs all aspects of marketing for Universal's domestic feature film releases including creative advertising, media, publicity, promotion, digital marketing and administration. He will report to Fogelson.
The promotions keep to¬gether the duo who have been tethered since May 2002, when Fogelson was named president of marketing and Egan was named co-president of marketing.
Fogelson joined Universal as vp creative advertising in 1998 and rose to executive vp creative advertising in 2002. Before joining Universal, he was senior vp worldwide marketing for Trimark Pictures, and before that was vp at the AFA Co., a production marketing and distribution consulting firm, where his clients included Carolco Pictures and Nelson Entertainment.
Egan joined Universal in 1994 as senior vp and was named executive vp marketing in 1999. Earlier, he held several marketing positions at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Before joining Sony in 1990, he held executive marketing positions at Fox and Paramount.
Fogelson and Egan are supervising the marketing campaigns for Universal's upcoming releases "American Gangster," "Charlie Wilson's War," George Clooney's "Leatherheads" and "Mamma Mia!" among others. In addition to movies, the duo also oversaw the marketing campaign for the hit musical "Wicked."
