Fox has spring in its step with new 'Dance'

NEW YORK -- Fox won Wednesday's primetime with a new episode of "So You Think You Can Dance" against the last game of this year's Stanley Cup finals on NBC and a night of original programming on ABC.

"Dance" was the night's top show with 10.2 million viewers and a 4.4 rating/12 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates released Thursday by Nielsen Media Research.

The 9 p.m. "Dance" had no trouble defeating the second-season premiere of ABC's "American Inventor" (7.8 million, 3.0/8), which was about what it did for last year's premiere. ABC's "The Next Best Thing: Who Is The Greatest Celebrity Impersonator" (8.3 million, 2.7/9) was up from last week's premiere (2.5/8).

It also had no trouble with the last game of the Stanley Cup Finals, which averaged 2.9 million viewers and a 1.2/4 that placed NBC firmly in fourth place for the night.

The 10 p.m. hour was won by a repeat "CSI: NY" (9.2 million, 2.7/8), which was ahead of ABC's drama "Traveler" (5.4 million, 1.8/5). "Traveler" dropped 14% from its premiere in the time period (2.1/6).

Wednesday averages: Fox (8.6 million, 3.6/11); CBS (7.5 million, 2.1/6); ABC (7.2 million, 2.5/7); NBC (2.9 million, 1.2/4); and the CW (1.8 million, 0.7/2).
